On 13–14 July 2026, a wildfire of unprecedented scale burnt through roughly 2,000 hectares of the Fontainebleau forest — nearly 10% of the massif, and the largest fire ever recorded here since records began in 1863. The two main outbreaks started in the Trois-Pignons massif (around Noisy-sur-École, ~1,500 ha) and near La Faisanderie / Apremont (~450 ha).
For climbers, the question is simple: which climbing and bouldering areas are open, and which are closed? Open from Saturday 22 August 2026: the new prefectural order no longer covers the Nemours communal forest, and the area lies outside the mapped prohibited zones. Follow the on-site signage.

Has the Fontainebleau forest reopened?
Yes, partially: roughly 80% of the massif reopens on Saturday 22 August 2026. Areas inside the prohibited zones remain closed. This page translates the prefectural map into the Boolder area breakdown (last update: 1 September 2026).
Cuvier, Franchard, Apremont: are these areas affected?
Apremont, Cuvier and Franchard reopen. Apremont Envers, Est, Solitude and Sully remain closed. Portes du Désert is partially open; several other sub-areas explicitly outside the prohibited zone reopen. Use the search tool and check the official map before travelling.
Can you climb or boulder elsewhere around Font?
Yes: Buthiers, Beauvais, Le Puiselet, Petit Bois, Haute Pierre, La Troche, Toit d’Orsay, Darvault and Rocher Gréau are open, and many central massif areas plus Mont d’Olivet reopened on 22 August. 22 August reopening: what remains prohibited
The reopening does not cover burnt or still-hazardous zones. In Trois-Pignons, Corne-Biche reopens, while most other areas remain closed. In the Fontainebleau massif, Mont Aigu, Apremont Est, Solitude and Sully remain prohibited.
Apremont Envers remains fully closed. Apremont Portes du Désert and La Ségognole are partial: only the parts outside the prohibited zone are accessible. At Portes du Désert, four boulders remain prohibited: La Grande Soif, Solar Impulse, Solar Sit-Pulse and Mécanorécepteur. Sandstone and trees may remain weakened near burnt surfaces.

Yes. From 22 August, Apremont, Cuvier, Franchard, several Apremont sub-areas, La Commanderie, Corne-Biche and Mont d’Olivet are among the open areas. Buthiers, Beauvais, Le Puiselet, Petit Bois, Haute Pierre, La Troche, Toit d’Orsay, Darvault and Rocher Gréau are also open.
